What are Sea Cadets?

Sea Cadets is a youth organisation for teenagers aged 13 years and over.

In all our cadets we try to foster strong leadership skills and a real sense of citizenship. We provide a disciplined environment for cadets to learn in but we place a lot of importance on having fun and providing young people with as many opportunities as possible.

Have a look around our website to find out more and please get in contact with us if you have any questions or want to find out more about joining.

The New Zealand Cadet Forces is comprised of the Sea Cadet Corps, the New Zealand Cadet Corps and the Air Training Corps.

It is a voluntary, disciplined, uniformed training organisation for youth.

The organisation is not part of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) but is controlled by the NZDF and is supported in partnership by the government, through the NZDF and the community.

Training programmes emphasis personnel development.  The organisation offers a quality, nationally coordinated training programme.

NZ Cadet Forces Aims to:
  • Foster a spirit of adventure and teamwork, and develop those qualities of mind and body essential for good citizens and leaders;
  • Provide challenging and disciplined training activities that will be useful in either service or civilian life; and
  • Promote an awareness of the armed forces and the role they play in the community.

What do we teach the cadets?

We run activities including sailing, rowing, rifle shooting, kayaking, camping, competitions, first aid, ropework, drill, naval ship visits, overseas exchanges and team building exercises.

Our Core Values:

Respect - having self respect and showing respect for others.

Integrity - being honest, open and trustworthy in all that we do.

Loyalty - being reliable and committed to our Unit and Corps.

Discipline - always conducting ourselves in a responsible manner.

Anzac Day Parade 2012

So, who is the best Sea Cadet Unit in all the land? Yes, that's right... WE ARE!!!

Again it was another good turn out for the civic ceremony by T.S. Leander.

With the blistering temperatures of at least 20 degrees... (Ensign Crawley shivers... sounds freezing to him!)

The cadets did the unit proud. There were many good words spoken about TS Leander, and the good job they do supporting the local community with the parade. It was good to see finally that the use of the DPTA's has been stopped for such important parades as this, honoring and remembering our fallen.

Chief of Navy Scholarship Winner, 2012

After applying for and progressing through the process of the Chief of Navy Scholarship, I received a letter on the 18th of December from Rear Admiral Parr informing me that I had been chosen to be awarded the full Scholarship. Shortly after this I received an invitation, along with my family, to the Royal New Zealand Navy Divisions on the 20th of January to both watch the ceremony and be presented with the Scholarship, and then attend Lunch at the HMNZS Philomel Wardroom.

CPOCDT L. Davidson with her very proud family! Congrats!!

It was an incredible day to be invited to. After the Parade had formed up and marched onto the field, Commodore Martin, Commodore Burroughs, Rear Admiral Steer, and finally Rear Admiral Parr with Mayor Len Brown were escorted onto the field. After Prayers, Mayor Len Brown, who had been invited to be the Reviewing Officer, proceeded to inspect all of the Divisions on parade before giving a quick speech. After the Parade had been inspected, the presentations of the awards commenced.

The Scholarship was presented to me by Rear Admiral Parr as the final presentation of the Parade. With the presentations completed, the parade then proceeded to March Past the V.I.P tents and the Chief of Navy, while the band played them on. With this completed the parade was dismissed and everyone was invited upstairs to the Ngataringa Sports Complex for cold drinks and biscuits.

The entire day was an amazing thing to be part of, and to see almost the entire Navy assembled on the sports field was an impressive thing to witness. Despite my nerves about both meeting Rear Admiral Parr and standing in front of most of the Navy, I managed to do myself and my Sea Cadets Unit proud. I enjoyed the whole day immensely and was very grateful both to be invited to the Parade and to be awarded the Scholarship.
